To Saint Anthony of Padua

O Saint Anthony, pure and most sweet lily of virginity, precious gem of poverty, example of abstinence, clearest mirror of purity, most brilliant star of holiness, splendor of Paradise, pillar of the holy Church, preacher of Grace, destroyer of vices, sower of virtues, comforter of the afflicted, most ardent flame of divine charity and pure love, shining light of Spain and Italy, imitator of the Seraphic Father Saint Francis, lover of peace and unity, despiser of worldly vanity, light of the holy Catholic faith, martyr of desire, glorious triumpher over heretics, great worker of miracles, most secure refuge of all who have recourse to you: you merited to hold the Son of the Most High in your holy arms; with your most ardent sermons you kindled in the minds of sinners the flame of divine charity.

Therefore I, a miserable sinner, humbly beg you to welcome me under your powerful protection, to obtain for me true contrition for my sins, the humble knowledge of my misery, the gift of weeping for my faults, the taste and fervor of prayer, firm resistance to evil, and the gift of the contemplation of God, infinite Beauty and Goodness. And since you are a most ardent flame of divine love, kindle my lukewarm and cold heart with the fire of divine charity, so as to make me always despise myself, the world, the flesh, and the devil, and make me advance from virtue to virtue, so that, living in constant fervor and dying the death of the Saints, I may merit, through your patronage, to be associated with them in heavenly glory. Amen.

O admirable Saint Anthony, glorious for the fame of miracles worked by you, you who had the happiness of welcoming the Lord in the appearance of a child into your arms, obtain for me from His goodness the grace that I ardently desire in the depths of my heart.

You who were so merciful to poor sinners, do not look at the demerits of the one praying to you, but to the glory of God, which will be exalted once more by you and by the salvation of my soul, not separated from the request I now make to you with such great desire.

Let the pledge of my gratitude be the promise of a life more in conformity with the Gospel teachings, consecrated to the relief of the poor, whom you loved and love so much.

Prayer to God through the intercession of Saint Anthony

We beseech You, O Lord, that the graces of which we are so much in need may be obtained for us through the intercession of Your blessed Confessor and Doctor, Anthony, whom You have made and continue to make ever more glorious through continuous miracles and wonders. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Pope Sixtus V, a Franciscan, had the prayer - also called the motto of Saint Anthony - engraved at the base of the obelisk he had erected in St. Peter's Square in Rome. Here it is in the original Latin:

Prayer recited at the tomb of the Saint

O dear St. Anthony, here I am near your blessed tomb. I have come to pray to you, driven by my need and confident in your compassionate goodness, which knows how to console everyone. Be my intercessor before God; speak, in my name, to the Father of mercies, and obtain for me the grace I particularly need...

I know my faith is weak; but you, who possessed this virtue in a marvelous way and aroused it in the crowds through your preaching, revive it in me and make it stronger and purer; you who led an evangelical life, help me to make mine more Christian, so that I may be a worthy child of the Father who is in heaven.

O St. Anthony, come to the aid of my weakness, keeping away diseases and dangers to soul and body; help me to always place my trust in God, especially in moments of trial and pain. Bless my work, my family, your devotees scattered throughout the world and here spiritually present: obtain for all a kind heart towards the poor and the suffering. O my protector, answer the trust I have always placed in your intercession before God.

The Responsory "Si quaeris miracula"

This prayer of praise - or responsory - in honor of Saint Anthony was composed by Friar Julian of Speyer. The responsory is part of the Officium rhythmicum s. Antonii, which dates back to 1233, two years after the death of the Saint. It is sung in the Basilica of Saint Anthony in Padua and, every Tuesday, in many churches throughout the world.

If you seek miracles, death, error, calamities, and the demon are put to flight; behold the sick becoming healthy. The sea calms down, chains break; the young and the old ask and regain their health and lost things. Dangers recede, needs disappear: let him who has experienced the protection of the Saint of Padua bear witness to it.

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit. As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.
